  • Monday morning fire ravages local shops

In the wee hours of Monday morning, 10 small vendor shops were somehow set ablaze on Patong beach road, making this the third fire of its knid in the last year and a half. It was confirmed that the fire was ignited around 5:00 am inside one of the small shops, which once ablaze, took firefighters from both Patong and Karon districts a total of 90 minutes to put out.

Fires in this area are particularly dangerous considering all the overhanging slack of electrical wires that firefighters have to make sure they don’t hose down, all the while limiting access of the water to the fire.

Goods destroyed in the fire were trinkets to be sold to tourists along with glasses, watches and various types of clothing that is, suffice to say, no longer saleable. No cause has been given by police, but the case will surely be compared to similar fires that happened last year; first in June and then in November. Colonel Grissak Songmoonark said he would work to determine whether or not the fires were related.

Yahoo News is reporting that Him Sarun, Cabinet chief for the Secretariat of Civil Aviation in Cambodia, has said an AN-24 jet carrying 13 South Koreans, three Czechs and four crew was flying from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville when it disappeared from radar screens at 10.40 a.m.

Bun Ratha, Director of Siem Reap International airport told Reuters that they do not yet know the fate of the lost jet, and that helicopter search teams have been sent out. There is speculation the plane may have crashed into mountain, and fears are that all the passengers may have perished.
