  • Fire causes 1 billion baht in damage

A fire at Global House, a hardware store and construction material warehouse in Chiang Mai, caused over a billion baht in damages. There were more than 200 workers on duty when the fire broke out. The workers had to run for their lives.

The fire was started by a spark off a welding torch from air-conditioning technicians working on the roof of the massive building. The fire traveled quickly through roofing materials and insulation to a room filled with gallons of painting supplies. Cans of paint thinner and other flammable products exploded and the fire was quickly out of control.

By the time the fire trucks arrived, much of the building was ablaze. Wood and other construction materials made for the perfect storm. Firefighters were outmatched, never gaining control over the flames. Two firefighters were injured when a wall collapsed and hit their fire truck.

Global house is one of the largest chain construction supply and hardware stores in Northern Thailand. The store supplied much of Chiang Mai and the surrounding area with all types of building products.

  • A million in fire damages at Marriott

A fire that engulfed the Marriott Patong Hotel on the island of Phuket in southern Thailand a few days ago is said to have caused upwards of 1 million baht in damages. Police Colonel Sopol Barirak, an inspector at Kathu Police Station told reporters that as soon as the fire fighters heard the news they raced to number 47 Ruamjaipatana Road in Patong to find the hotel in flames. The cause is suspected to have been a notice board catching fire with sparks from a welder working nearby.

It took about twenty minutes for fire fighters to bring the flames under control at the hotel, which was still undergoing construction. The contract manager of the building explains that “while our staff was fitting the iron, something went wrong with the electric current, and so a flame suddenly shot up and burned the hotel board. The prevalent windy and hot conditions helped the fire to spread quickly.

Police have requested that the construction manager and staff members appear at the Kathu Police Station for further questioning.
