Bangkok to host world food festival
The 2008 World Gourmet Festival is gearing up for its 9th year in Bangkok. This popular annual foodie-fest will happen at the Four Seasons Hotel in Bangkok between 22-28 September and will feature some of the world’s top chefs from famous restaurants.
An extraordinary roster of internationally renowned chefs from across the globe has committed to this year’s event, including Jeffrey Jake from Napa Valley’s Carneros Inn and Maurizio Quaranta from Locanda del Pilone in Alba, Italy. Although the concept of an international food festival is nothing new, this charity event in Bangkok is one of the few that can bring together such a celebrity lineup of master chefs.
For one week, the chefs will share their tips on cooking and provide insightful information on their award-winning cuisine. There will also be plenty of emphasis on enjoying the array of outstanding food and wine from around the world. Nicolas Schneller, the executive chef of the Four Seasons is overseeing the event.
Each chef will give one cooking demonstration, and host two evenings in one of the Four Seasons’ restaurants. On Friday the 26th, guests can join the event’s highlight, a seven-course Gala dinner featuring all the chefs together. All proceeds from the World Gourmet Gala Dinner will go to HRH Princess Soamsawali’s ‘Save a Child’s Like from AIDS’ project.

Dairy gourmands in for treat at Millennium Hilton
The Millenium Hilton Hotel in Bangkok is high class all the way. The hotel is already well known for the five-star quality of its restaurants, and now it plans to go one step further by creating a special cheese room at the FLOW restaurant located in the hotel.
The room will be climate controlled to suit the cheese’s natural native environments, and controlled and monitored by cheese aficionados to assure premium conditions. Going too far, you ask?
“While the cheese room is common in Europe, the concept is just taking off in Asia. We thought it’s timely that we give this endearing ‘side-dish’ a dedicated spot in the heart of Bangkok, says director of food and beverage at the hotel, Erwin Vanderveen. He went on to say, “We noticed that many food-lovers who frequent our award-winning restaurants and lounges request cheese, whether as a snack or as a dessert, but mainly more as a ‘social’ dish that creates a congenial mood for them to kickback and relax from a hectic day.
And of course everyone knows what goes best with cheese, and a full range of complimentary wines will be available on recommendations form the experts.

Samak holds rice stockpiles
Thailand’s Prime Minister, Samak Sundaravej, has said that he opposes the release of the country’s two-million-plus tonnes of rice reserves into the domestic market to curb the apparent rice shortage.
Mr Samak insisted there would not actually be a rice shortage, during his weekly TV and radio address, and blamed the media for causing panic about a rice shortage.
Many people have subsequently hoarded rice as a result of press reports and the near doubling of rice prices. It has thus been suggested that the government should release the rice stockpile to aid low-income families and the unemployed.
Thailand currently produces about 30 million tonnes of rice per year, which is equivalent to 20 million tonnes of milled rice. Nine million tonnes go to the domestic market, with a similar amount exported and the remaining two million tonnes held back by the government as a safety line.
Mr Samak explained that his opposition to releasing the stockpiled rice at cost to the domestic market was because rice farmers would gain nothing and that rice price mechanisms would be drastically affected.
Although food in Thailand to the foreign tourist is significantly cheaper than their home countries, there has been a marked increase in the kilogramme rate of rice and together with spiraling oil prices, food off the street has increased by a fair amount and will no doubt affect those travelers on a budget.

Pattaya markets given ultimatum
In a meeting at Pattaya City Hall last week, operators of local market stalls were invited to discuss regulations with the Ministry of Public Health concerning new laws on what will be expected of them in keeping their stalls clean and hygienic would affect them.
The meeting ended with a warning form the Ministry, saying any market operators that did not comply with the standards set forth within 150 days would face losing their operating licence.
Chatchawan Chimtin, head of the heath department told a reporter from the Pattaya Mail that the new regulations were passed down on January 7th, and operators have had enough time to quite literally clean up their act. Chatchawan told the newspaper that 60 days after the meeting, health inspectors would be investigating 15 Pattaya markets. Offenders will have 150 days to bring their business up to standard, where further offence will result in a suspension of their licence.
The regulations now recognize two types of market, the permanent markets under an enclosed space, and the unstructured or market fairs. Rules for permanent markets are more serious and if implemented, will assure all produce purchased in them is clean and hygienic.
