  • New golf course for Krabi

Krabi’s much-talked-about golf course in Klong Muang has finally made it to the construction phase and will bring Krabi’s number of golf courses to two when completed.

The 9-hole Klong Muang golf course will be built on part of the Krabi Sofitel Phokeethra Resort in Klong Muang.

Land has already been cleared for the course and building is expected to start later this month.

The project promises to be a good prospect for visitors, locals and resort residents bringing more interest to this particular region of Krabi

Although the Klong Muang course will be part of the Sofitel Resort, it will also be open to the general public for a fee.

The only restriction to the public being that players must at least have a handicap.

The new golf course’s fairways and greens will overlook Klong Muang beach and the Hong Islands to offer a stunning backdrop.

Krabi’s other golf course is the Neua Klong district 18-hole Pakasai Country Club.

  • Asian Tour promises big purses in 2008

On Monday, organizers of the 2008 Asian Tour announced that next year’s purses will be $3 million higher than last year. Eleven tournaments on the tour are offering a purse of over $1 million each with several prestigious tournaments in the Tour taking place in Thailand.

The Asian Tour is the fastest-growing golf circuit and next year will include tournaments in 16 different countries. The game has become increasingly popular both for participants and for spectators in the Asian region.

First opened in 1994, the Asian Tour in 2008 is currently offering a total prize fund of $27 million according to executive chairman Kyi Hla Han.

"Many of our events will raise their prize funds to record figures and this clearly signifies the growing strength of the game across the region and the support from corporate Asia," Kyi Hla Han said in a statement. "Negotiations are also in the final stages for a number of other events to be added to the schedule."

This year two new events joined the Tour. The Pine Valley Beijing Open and the Johor Open will participate again in 2008 and will offer more than double the prize pots awarded this year. The Malaysian Open is offering $2 million for the 2008 Tour but it is the Singapore Open which draws the world’s top players.

Thailand, which boasts some of the regions finest golf courses, will host the Bangkok Airways Open from June 5th to 8th, 2008 in Santiburi Samui. The purse being offered is $300,000.

Later in the year the Volvo Masters of Asia tournament will take place at the Thai Country Club in Bangkok from December 18th to 21st, 2008. The prize is $750,000.

Seven of the events already scheduled will be co-sanctioned with the European Tour. Nine tournaments in 2008 will be hosted within Chinese territories.

The Tour is scheduled to begin on January 24th although the location and prize purse have not been revealed.

  • Where to Golf in Hua Hin

Foreign tourists and golfers from Thailand alike love the greens in Hua Hin, a beach resort town just a few hours from Bangkok. A popular weekend getaway for those who live in the capital city, Hua Hin is known for its gorgeous sunshine, exceptionally good weather and great golfing.

The Royal Hua Hin Golf Course was the first of its kind in Thailand and has been welcoming golfers for 80 years. Despite embracing a western game, the course remains remarkably Thai, with shrubs sculpted into mythical creatures and animals native to Thailand. The course sets high standards for golfing in the country, offering some of the best caddies in the region, known fondly as ‘the canaries’ for their yellow attire.

The Majestic Creek & Milford Golf Course is a championship course with 27 holes nestled amidst farmland, pineapple groves and mango trees. It is often favored by those staying at the Dusit Resort Hotel due to its close proximity and great water holes.

The Springfield Golf Course is a challenging championship 18-hole course and is said by many to be the best course in the country. The teaching staff are PGA professionals and the scenery surrounding the greens is spectacular.

Max Wexler designed the Palm Hills Golf Course, but it is perhaps most popular among golfers who just love the game, even if they can’t play it very well. The course offers glimpses of the ocean, the sounds of the serve and a cool breeze off the sea.

In 2008 the Black Mountain Golf Course will stage a PGA Tour event. The course actually has two parts. The East Course offers championship level golfing while the West Course is a more relaxed resort course.

Hua Hin has a number of excellent resorts and restaurants. Many accommodations can arrange reservations at any of the six golf courses and some can also provide partners.
