Suandok Hospital in Chiang Mai needs doctors The Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, today called the Suandok Hospital, is swamped with heart and brain patients. The medical center, founded in 1959, has grown into the major medical hub of Northern Thailand serving over ten million people from the 17 northern provinces. The hospital is considered one of the best in Thailand, specializing in heart and brain diseases.

Unfortunately, the Suandok hospital is short on doctors who can treat patients with common heart and brain diseases. In Thailand, problems involving the heart and brain account for a large majority of deaths each year. Heart disease is the second leading cause of death, while brain diseases are the third leading cause.

"A very long queue of patients is a common sight, and many of them go home disappointed. Some have to wait so long that they are almost in despair," Asst Prof Dr Siwaporn Chankrachang, chief of the Northern Neuroscience Centre, said.

The hospital is looking for more doctors to fill the high demand. Suandok Hospital currently has eight heart specialists and five brain specialists. The doctors are in increasingly high demand, serving more than 5,000 heart disease patients and 3,000 brain disorder patients each year.
