  • New communications link for Thailand

Thailand is set to get a new submarine cable link that will better connect the country’s communications infrastructure to international connections. JasTel Network is the company planning to invest more than one billion baht in the underwater cable, which will greatly improve existing Internet lines and telecommunications.

The JasTel line, if approved by the government, will offer a welcome alternative to the services of CAT Telecom, Thailand’s main Internet provider. JasTel’s general manager, Somchai Treerattananukool, said its investment proposal is awaiting approval from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC). "We hope this investment would offer another choice for clients apart from the services of CAT Telecom," Somchai said.

Somchai reported that his new submarine cable would provide greater bandwidth by connecting Thailand with multiple international operators. This diversity would allow Thailand’s broadband Internet to become more financially competitive with foreign companies. This translates into Internet connection rates for customers that are much cheaper than current fees.

The planned investments would also help encourage more communications growth in the future. Best of all, Thai consumers will finally have a decent choice for their Internet provider.
