Hmong tribespeople sent back to Laos
According to the UN refugee agency hundreds of Hmong villagers were repatriated to Laos from a local camp in Petchabun province on Friday.
The total number repatriated was 391, which brings the number of Hmong returned to Laos in the past three weeks to 1,228.
The latest batch of ethnic Hmong moved to Laos on Friday were taken from Ban Huay Nam Khao camp, Petchabun province, by the army, said the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
According to the UNHCR there was no information that the move was not voluntary.
Ban Huay Nam Khao camp still has around 6,000 ethnic Hmong living there, while hundreds more are either living outside the camp or have fled elsewhere.
Chiang Mai also has a huge Hmong population but there was no information that any of them were being relocated to Laos.

Mekong Bridge Links Yunnan and Bangkok Via Laos
China, Thailand and Laos have agreed to build a bridge across the Mekong River between Chiang Khong in northern Thailand and Huay Xai in Laos. The bridge will make the final connection in the road between Yunnan and Bangkok. The project is scheuled for completion in 2011 and will be jointly financed by Beijing and Bangkok, according to The Nation's source.

Paperless Ticketing Coming to Lao Airlines
Lao Airlines has signed up with Amadeus' e-Retail system which is an e-commerce global booking solution to implement e-ticketing. This system will also allow travellers to make their reservations online from the convenience of home or an internet café. Once the system is up and running, Lao Airlines will confirm with IATA guidelines to be 100% paperless ticketing by 2008.

Mekong Migrant Workers Face High Risks of HIV Infection
The recent growth in the number of migrant workers between countries in the Greater Mekong Subregion is leading to increased exposure of those workers to the risk of HIV infection, according to a report on a recent conference in Bangkok orgainised by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The organization will try to improve the situation through educational videos. Thanh Nien News carried the story.

33.5 Million USD for Improving Power Supplies in Cambodia and Laos
According to Japan Today, the World Bank stated that they had approved a grant for US$33.5 million to improve power supplies in Laos and Cambodia. A statement by the organisation explained that this will lead to lower power costs in some areas which currently have high electricity tariffs.

Laos Coup Plot Thwarted in California
Police have arrested nine people in California on charges of plotting to overthrow the communist government in Laos. The group includes Vang Pao, the 77 year-old former general in the Royal Lao Army who led CIA-backed Hmong forces during the 1960s and 1970s.
Vang Pao fled to the US after the 1975 communist seizure of power in Laos. He has been living in Orange County in recent years, and is well-known and respected among the Hmong community in the US for the assistance he has given them improving their lives.

Indochinese Refugees on the Brink of Chinese Citizenship
The United Nation said that 260,000 Indochinese refugees who fled to China in the late 1970s and early 1980s may be granted Chinese citizenship. Most of the refugees were originally from Vietnam, with some from Laos and Cambodia. They are mainly settled in southern China. Reuters has the details.

Thailand to Import More Electricity from Laos
Energy Minister Piyasvasti Amranand told the Bangkok Post that Thailand may import additional electricity from Laos. Thailand has signed agreements to buy 5,000 megawatts of electricity from Laos by 2015. There are eight power plants ready for development this year. Electricity from two of eight power plants has already been exported to Thailand.

Upgrading Mekong River Trade
Transport ministers from the six nations along the Mekong River have signed a co-operation agreement to jointly build a cross-border trade and transport systems. By the end of the year, China will improve the channels of the Mekong to enable larger vessels to sail between China, and the countries downriver. New Economic Development Triangle Emerging

According to Bernama, Laos's first highway is set to open to traffic later this year. This road will run from Kunming through northern Laos to Thailand.
