A380 too much plane for airports to handle?
The fact that the Asian tour to showcase and test the brand new superjumbo jet, the Airbus A380 included Chiang Mai on its list of destinations is if not impressive than perhaps slightly unlikely. Nonetheless, the A380 visited Chiang Mai International Airport as planned on Saturday, albeit with a slight delay.
The massive jet collided with a hangar door as it attempted to back out of its space at its previous stop, Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok. The plane touched down in Chiang Mai around 4 o’clock pm and carried VIP passengers the likes of the President of Thai Airways.
The left winglet was damaged and workers removed its counterpart on the right wing so the plane could continue its journey.
The delay meant that there were only a few die-hard enthusiasts on hand to cheer the plane as it landed as part of Airbus’ ‘ smooth entry into service tour’. Edouardo Ullmo of Airbus, explained the choice to land in Chiang Mai as, ‘We want to prove with the flight to Chiang Mai that the A380 is capable to operate also on so-called secondary airports.’
Why the plane never taxied to a jet way but instead parked outside the Thai Airlines hangar was not discussed.

The Queen speaks out during birthday speech
Her majesty the Queen Sirikit used the occasion of her speech celebrating her 75th birthday to address issues that are important today for the people of Thailand. One large issue facing the country right now is the new draft constitution that was approved by a majority of voters on the same day as her majesty’s birthday.
On the subject of issues in the new constitution, Her Majesty said that although she believes that it is the role of every monarch to protect the tenets of Buddhism with their lives, she stressed the importance of the separation between religion and politics, saying the status of Buddhism should not be addressed in the document. This was in response to a section of the population who wished to use the drafting of a new constitution to re-implement a Buddhist-run government.
She also addressed the state of the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok’s main waterway, seen by most tourists from a thin boat cruising the rive and its canal systems. The recent news of heavy pollution is of concern to the Queen, who believes if something is not done, the river as a source for food will be impossible and many species will become extinct.
The celebration of Her majesty the Queen’s birthday was held at the Dusitdalai pavilion in Chitrlada Palace and was attended by over 15,000 people.

Chiang Mai to welcome the Superjumbo
There are two planes slated for release in the next months that will set a new standard for long haul travel. The ‘superjumbos’ are Boeing’s Dreamliner and the Airbus A380, which will include Chiang Mai in its upcoming world tour.
The French-produced Goliath of the sky will embark on its historic circumnavigation next week to test how it will integrate with the world’s airports when it comes into service. Many of the world’s major airports have had to make considerable improvements and even build new terminals to accommodate the jet.
The Asian leg of the journey starts with the A380’s arrival at Suvarnabhumi International Airport on August 31st, and then coming north to Chiang Mai for September 1st.
After strutting its stuff down the tarmac in Chiang Mai, it will continue on to Hanoi, then Hong Kong and Seoul. The exact time the superjumbo will be landing in Chiang Mai could not be confirmed at this time, but it’s evident that it will be met with many curious onlookers and local media.
The aircraft boasts a vast improvement in personal cabin space and can hold over 500 passengers while offering the quietest ride in the sky, due to its fiberglass, on piece fuselage.
